Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) tracks toxic chemicals that can threaten human health and the environment. U.S. facilities must annually report the quantity of each chemical released to the environment and managements through recycling, energy recovery, and treatment. EPA published a TRI Fact Sheet that you can read here. The TRI reporting deadline, July 1st, is quickly approaching and it is important to collect the necessary data now in order to prevent costly mistakes.
Industrial facilities report data about how they are managing chemical waste through:
- Recycling
- Energy recovery
- Treatment
- Disposal
- Environmental releases
Data collection may include foundry quality data for inorganic constituents, quantifying the metal scrap collected, and reviewing all the emissions data previously reported to regulatory agencies that oversees any of your permits. EPA published a page with training for people involved with TRI reporting; click here to learn more.
If your facility meets all of the following criteria, you are required to report to the TRI Program:
- Employs 10 or more full-time equivalent employees.
- Manufactures, processes, or otherwise uses a TRI-listed chemical in quantities above threshold levels in a given year.
- Is in a specific industry sector (e.g., manufacturing, mining, electric power generation). Note that federal facilities must report regardless of industry sector if they meet the other two criteria.
